Welcome to the school year
2007 - 2008
The beginning of a new school year is always an exciting time for both staff and children alike. We all have high expectations and a renewed determination to do well and achieve even greater things.
This booklet is to inform you of what is planned for the coming year. I hope you find it useful and informative.
Reading Challenge
As we feel that reading is one of the most important things your children learn at school we are intending to continue our popular Bookworm Challenge.
Children in the Foundation Stage to Year 4 will have to complete;
- 30 home reading sessions to receive a bronze certificate and a bookmark
- 40 home reading sessions to receive a silver certificate and a rubber
- 50 home reading sessions to receive a gold certificate and a book
The children will receive a small booklet where each reading session will be entered. There is a space to indicate the book, the pages read and a comment if you wish. Children can only have one reading session a day entered in the booklet. Children will be expected to read for at approximately fifteen minutes before an entry should be made.
Spelling Challenge
We are intending to implement a spelling challenge this term. Details will follow once agreed by staff.

Health and Safety
It is school policy that children do not wear jewellery during PE. If a child wears earrings and is unable to remove them please supply plasters to cover them.
Long hair must be tied back.
Healthy Eating
We are continuing to promote Healthy Eating.
The School's Catering Service, in line with the new strict DfES guidelines, is ensuring that fruit and vegetables are available daily.
Kirmington School is continuing in the Fruit and Vegetable Scheme which is a national scheme that entitles every child aged four to six in LEA-maintained schools to a free piece of fruit or vegetable each school day. This scheme is paid for by the Department of Health.
I would also ask parents of children who bring food to school, either packed lunches or snacks for playtime, to support this Healthy Eating initiative.
I would also like to remind parents that we have children in school with severe nut allergy. Therefore we request that children do not bring nuts into school as part of their packed lunch or morning snack.
