Church History

The Anglican parish church is dedicated to St. Helen.
The Church tower dates to the twelfth century.
The Rectory house was built in 1846.
The Church was restored in 1859. It seats about 220.
The Anglican parish register dates from 1698.

The following is a brief review of the War Memorial to the fallen of two World Wars situated in the grounds of the Parish Church of St Helen's, KIRMINGTON.
Personal data is drawn from The Commonwealth War Graves Commission and from ' Soldiers Died in The Great War 1914 - 1919 ' Vol 15.

The memorial, in the form of a tall, eight sided column surmounted by a cross on a stepped plinth stands just inside the churchyard adjacent to the boundary fence fronting onto the main road through the village and opposite to the village school.


On the main block plinth and the two steps beneath it are inscribed the words:

John BRACKENBURY is believed to have been the son of Charles and Maria Brackenbury. He was born near Lincoln and served as Private 203113 in the 4th Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment and died of his wounds on the 5th January 1918 aged 27.He had been awarded the Military Medal for brave conduct during the conflict and is buried in the Canwick Road Cemetery, Lincoln.

C BROCKLEBANK was the son of Joseph Hugh Turner Brocklebank and served as Private 1834 in the Lincolnshire Yeomanry. He was killed on the 3rd November 1915 at Gallipoli and is commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Turkey.

Harry DENT was the son of Mary J Dent of Keelby and served as Private 50619 in the 9th Battalion, The Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment).He was killed in action on the 24th November 1916 aged 22 and has no known grave. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France.

George Edward ELSOM served as Private 1196 in the 10th Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment (The Grimsby Chums) and was killed on the 1st July 1916 (The First Day of The Somme) aged 27.He was the son of Joseph and Elizabeth Elsom of Kirmington and having no known grave is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.

Rupert Wilfred GRANT, the son of Smith and Harriet Fanny Grant of Kirmington, served as Private 201848 in the 4th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment and was killed in action on the 25th December 1917 aged 25.He is buried in the Tyne Cot Cemetery in Belgium.

George Henry HAVERCROFT was killed on the 23rd October 1916 aged 35 whilst serving as Private 25182 in the 2nd Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment. He was the son of George Havercroft of Kirmington and of Nellie Mason (formerly Havercroft) of High Street, Caistor. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.

N K HODSON is believed to have been Private TRB 2728 of the 11th Training Reserve who died on the 15th April 1917.He is buried in the churchyard.

George HURD was born at Goxhill and enlisted at Caistor into the Sherwood Forresters as Private 49972.He later transferred to the 13th Battalion Kings (Liverpool) Regiment with whom he was serving when killed in action on the 10th April 1918.

J PARKER has not been further identified.

Charles Leeson PORTERGILL was the husband of Mary Elizabeth Portergill of Kirmington and was killed on the 11th August 1916 whilst serving as Private 15076 in the 2nd Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment. He is commemorated on the Loos Memorial.

1939 - 1945

W BLANCHARD is believed to be Private 4865814 of the 1st Battalion Leicestershire Regiment who was killed aged 35 on the 20th January 1942 during the battle for Singapore. He is commemorated on the Kranji War Memorial.

Christopher Parker MAPPLETHORPE died on the 22nd October 1940 whilst serving as Sgt 550436 Wireless Operator/Air Gunner with 10 Squadron Royal Air Force. He is buried in the Durnbach War Cemetery, Bayern, Germany.

F HOLMES has not been further identified

Hartley WARD, the son of Henry and Mary Ward of Kirmington was killed on the 24th June 1941 aged 23 whilst serving as Sgt 999007 with the RAFVR. He is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.
